On June 14th, Sunday service was offered at Europe Olivet Center, and Pastor Andrew Clark delivered the message from Genesis 32:22-32 titled “Jacob’s Wrestle at Jabbok”.

Through the story of Jacob and Esau the history that was lost because of sin, envy and hatred in Cain and Abel was restored. Growing up, Jacob had the heart of wanting to inherit the faith and history, and through that he could understand God’s time and live the proper way. This beautiful heart led to him receiving the blessings from his father.

However, Esau who had not learned the life of faith well followed the similar path as Cain, and hatred and envy grew inside him towards his brother. The history of hatred and murder could have repeated here, however, it was through Rebekah that Jacob was able to be protected and to be guided on the right path. In faith we need to find and hold on to our Rebekah well; the one who can guide and protect us as we go the path of faith.

In addition, we also need to learn the heart and faith of Rebekah, and we need to inherit this. Her heart was urgent that the history of faith could not just end with her, but the history had to be inherited and passed on. So she is willing to give up everything to the history of God. She even says “Let the curse fall on me”. She is willing to take all the curse and punishment on herself, as long as the history of faith can be passed on well. We need to look into our own hearts and make sure we still have this deep world of sacrifice and love. Through the love, faith and will to sacrifice everything inside of Rebekah, the history of Cain and Abel is not repeated here.

So we are able to see that Jacob survived, but the path of faith can be a long and difficult path through the desert. For 20 years he works like a slave under Laban, who always looks to deceive and cheat for his own gain.

However, Jacob did not fight against Laban with anger and hatred, but he lowered himself and served. He endured faithfully with humility, staying true to the faith he had inherited. A person who responds to adversity and suffering like this can become true Israel, and such a person can be blessed by God abundantly. Even though there was so much suffering and pain under Laban, God still blesses him, and by the time he leaves Laban, Jacob has received so many blessings. What’s more, even Laban could not slander him. This is the result of living a true life of faith and love.

Then we are able to see Jacob on the road towards reconciliation with his brother Esau. He was so close, and the beautiful history of reconciliation is so near, but then suddenly his way was blocked. Why would God not just open the pathway for him as quickly as possible here? Why does Jacob suffer so much wrestling and fighting all through the night. After so much suffering already, he has to fight again. For many Christians who experience this on their paths of faith, it can be a stumbling block. They cannot understand why the life of faith is so difficult, and why they would be blocked.

However, to understand this, we should not look at the outward things, but we need to focus on the heart of God. Do you truly know the heart of God? To participate in this history of reconciliation and experience the amazing joy of finding back the one who was lost, you must have the same heart as God.

God has the heart that will never stop fighting for the ones who have been lost in the history of sin. The Father would lay down everything He has, even His most precious thing, to find back the lost ones. This is the power of the amazing love of God. From creation, God’s motivation was love, and this same love pervades through the history of salvation and even this same love is the love that has captured our hearts and changed our lives today. God’s love is relentless and unconditional. He does not give up, even through all the darkness He doesn’t rest, or give up and just settle for what He has right now. But He keeps fighting to find one more! It’s the love that would even leave the 99 sheep to find the one lost lamb – the Esau, the you, and the me!

Are we willing to fight with the same intense and unrelenting love all through the painful night? How much do we want to save Esau or the one lost lamb? We have to inherit this heart of Jacob, which reflects the same heart as God – the heart that would even fight all through the night until the dawn breaks.

Only by knowing the heart of God, and by the power of love, could Jacob suffer so much pain, and loss and still endure in the battle.

Members were challenged to examine their hearts, and whether they have the motive of love inside of them. Does the passion to take part in this history of reconciliation burn like fire within us? Just like Jacob and Esau embraced each other and wept, there will be tears of joy in heaven and within us when we experience this history of reconciliation. May we all prevail in this fight, having the love of God in our hearts.

On June 7th, Europe Olivet Center offered the first Sunday service of the new month to God. Pastor Andrew Clark delivered a message from Acts 2:36-41 titled, “Repent, Be Baptized and Receive the Holy Spirit”.

Apostle Peter delivers a sermon on Pentecost and 3000 people were saved and added to their number. This is an amazing miracle, how could this take place? It tells us that Peter’s words cut the listeners to their heart. Usually the people of this world are stubborn, arrogant, and prideful, and often it is even difficult to change someone’s mind, let alone to the depths of their hearts. But here Peter’s words have a profound effect and from their very hearts these people are changed.

This is the core of our mission and evangelism; we must change people in the depths of their hearts, and only then can they truly change. That means we cannot win them over with our intelligence or our own strength and skills, but this kind of change in the heart can only be performed with the power from above.

So what is at the core of Peter’s words in his sermon? It’s that he is exhorting the truth. He is not holding back, but filled with the power of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Truth – he boldly and without hindrance is telling the listeners clearly the truth of the Gospel, of Jesus the Messiah, and ultimately the love of the God. We must realize again and again, our commissions are not the ones that can be fulfilled by man’s power, but only by the power of God through the Holy Spirit.

So reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit is key. But thankfully, this is not something that the Lord withholds from us at all. With Pentecost, a new era has commenced. Jesus ascended to heaven, and God does not leave us like orphans in this sinful world, but He sends us the Holy Spirit, which will lead us into all truth, and guide us in all our battles. It will grant us wisdom when we seek it, and it will give us comfort and strength when we need it. Now, anyone who comes to call on the name of the Lord by faith can receive the Holy Spirit. This was the era that has been opened up to us through Jesus Christ. The era of abundance.

So firstly, we need to realize deeply the love of God, through Jesus Christ and the cross and resurrection. This is the truth. The cross was not a failure, or shameful, but it was a victory of love, and it was redemption for us. When we come to realize this love of the cross, then in the face of this truth we see our sins laid bare – we come to repent! Peter and Paul, the main apostles recorded in the book of Acts, were both people who had this deep realization of their sins, and they lived with deep repentance. Ultimately this leads them to realize the grace of God to a larger extent, and guides them to a great revelation of the love of Christ. This is the truth they came to realize!

So in the same way, we need to realize this truth and the love of God more deeply. To those who have this realization, they come to call on the name of the Lord, and they will receive the Holy Spirit. Then what remains? We must become witnesses of this truth, and of what we have realized. To those whom He has called, He also wishes to send – the purpose of our calling is that we are to be sent, and we are to give witness and testify to what we have seen, heard and realized.

Peter, who had realized his own sins deeply in the face of the love of the Lord, received the Holy Spirit, and then gave great witness to those who gathered to them on Pentecost. The truth cuts them to their hearts, and he guides them to repent, be reborn and receive the Holy Spirit.

This miracle is a reflection of the amazing miracle that Jesus also performed in feeding the 5,000. The Lord fed them with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish. Jesus Himself declared that He was the bread of life. He was the truth – He came with the truth, He declared the truth with every breath, and His very life was the truth. What was the life of Jesus? Ultimately it was the path of the cross – this is the greatest revelation of the love of God! We must let this love enter us and become life for us. Then the 2 fish are the witnesses. In the Old Testament the pillars were Moses and Elijah, and throughout the history we see the image of 2 witnesses going together to fulfill the purpose of God. That day 5,000 were fed by the fruitful witness of God, and in the same way, on the day of Pentecost, Peter – fulfilling this commission as a fruitful witness – feeds 3,000.

Let us meditate on the deep love of the Lord again and again. Through the deep realization of the love of God we ripen as fruit of love, and the Holy Spirit will empower us and we can give joy to the Father as His fruitful witnesses to the ends of the earth.

First, we need to know the truth and love of God deeply. Then with repentant hearts we come to call on His name and receive the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of Truth will allow us to realize the purpose and meaning of our lives and our commission, and we can step forward boldly as the witnesses of God’s love in this era.

Everyone was reminded to meditate on the love of God and deeply realize it. The focus of each person’s life should be to bear fruit and to become the witness. The motive of all our works is to save one more soul. May Europe sow the new seeds with tears, that we may be able to reap the harvest with joy.

On May 31st, members of the Europe Olivet Center had a joint Pentecost Sunday Service with London Immanuel congregation via an online livestream to commemorate the establishment of the Early Church with the Holy Spirit coming down.

Pastor Andrew explained the meaning of this new era through Acts 2:1-21, where the Holy Spirit can be received by everyone who believes.

After the Holy Spirit is poured down to those gathered, Apostle Peter stands and addresses the crowd, highlighting the prophecy from Prophet Joel: “I will pour out my spirit on all flesh” (KJV).

In creation, God created the flesh of man from the dust of the ground and put His Spirit inside of them. From the very beginning, we are not meant to be only flesh but through the breath of God man became a true living soul. Man should live by the Spirit, and live a joyful life with God, experiencing all the fruits of the spirit. However, man fell into sin and wickedness, and only focused on the flesh, seeking worldly pleasures and desires alone. Man’s sin escalated so much, that in Genesis 6 God even regretted creating man. When He saw the wickedness of man, He could only see this image of flesh and says His spirit cannot contend with man forever. It had become the place where the Spirit could not dwell.

Our lives were supposed to be abundant, overflowing with the fruits of the Spirit. However, without the breath of God, even though we live and breathe we live as if we are dead; there is no meaning or purpose. This was the tragic history of man who fell into sin.

However, the love and faithfulness of God remained with us despite our transgressions. Even though man lived like this, living by the flesh alone, the Father sent His Son. The cross atoned for our sins and cleansed us, allowing us to be brought back to the Father. Now through Jesus Christ, God pours out His Spirit once again. Pentecost is the day of great restoration, God fulfilling His desire from the very beginning and filling us with power of the Holy Spirit who gives wisdom, strength and understanding. This is an amazing gift. Now our lives can become where the flesh is led by the Spirit, and we can live life in abundance with God as He intended.

To those who have faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will be given freely. Like the day of Jubilee that the Israelites celebrated every 50th year, where liberty and freedom is proclaimed throughout the land. All debts were wiped out in this year and even servants were set free. The sounding of the trumpets proclaim complete liberation to all in the nation of Israel.

But this story of Jubilee is not just a story of the past, but it has become our story and our lives. Since the Fall of Man, people were enslaved by their sins, and chained to Satan. We were unable to break free from this life of sin, piling it up as debt against ourselves. However, the Lord has set us free! This was only possible through Jesus Christ and the cross of amazing love. He has cleansed us from all our sins; it is the perfect revelation of the Father’s love, and the power of this love gives birth to life.

Those receiving this love by faith are born again in the Spirit, and to those who have been reborn, they inherit the Great Commission. The Spirit of God wills us and guides us to mission and evangelism, and those filled with the Spirit of God – their mouths become like the trumpet proclaiming the Good News of universal liberation and forgiveness of sins to all mankind through faith in Jesus Christ.

Let us always call on the Holy Spirit to take over our lives, and by being empowered by the Spirit, let us take the love of Jesus Christ to all the nations.

On May 17th, Europe Olivet Center and London Immanuel Church congregations came together for the Sunday service, which was also live-streamed. Pastor Andrew gave a message from Romans 8:26-28, titled “So Everything Will Be In Accordance With God’s Will”.

Through Romans, Apostle Paul explained that we were in the position of the gravest sinners, who deserved eternal death and rightly should receive the wrath of God. However, we have also become the people who have been saved by the amazing grace of God through Jesus Christ, and the cross and resurrection.

Already this incalculable grace was received, and even though we have now been called righteous, by faith, however, still we find ourselves in this in-between stage. A place where even though we have been made new, but there remains a continuous battle inside of us with the sinful habits that remain. We come to realize more and more how our flesh is so weak, and our wretched bodies continuously lead us astray from the straight path we know we should go on. We are already but not yet, that is already we have received our salvation, but the full glorification has not yet been obtained.

“If we forget we are in this in-between stage, we can very easily find ourselves falling into despair, and we can misunderstand our lives. We can grow weary and tired as we gain a deeper realization of the weaknesses that we have, and this sinful nature that lingers. But we must not lose strength in this process we are in,” it was explained.

The key is we must be diligent in the process of washing our new robes. It is a long path, and each sinful habit must be taken out one by one.

“We face many outward fights and battles, but ultimately it is the inward fight that is by far the most difficult. You are fighting against yourself. We fall into despair about the things we know we should not do, but yet we still do them. If we are not careful, a nature of self-torturing, and a darkness of depression can overwhelm us,” Pastor Andrew shared.

However, when we understand the in-between place that we stand more deeply, we can see there is hope. Apostle Paul reveals the secret of how to overcome this and how to gain renewed strength in this long process.

First, we must realize that we cannot fight sin by ourselves. By our own human strength and willpower it is not possible. But we are made perfect in Christ alone!

As Paul says in Romans 7:20, “Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”

And in verse 24-25, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

In Romans 8:26, Paul continues saying “the Spirit helps us in our weakness”.

We have to know we are not in this battle alone. God sends the Holy Spirit to watch over His people, it walks with us, it works in us, and it works to redirect all things towards the will of God.

Furthermore, the Holy Spirit knows us better than we know ourselves, knowing all our weaknesses, and it works to fill up what we lack more than enough, and it works to direct us back to the straight path even when we have wandered.

“The Holy Spirit will comfort you, it will cover up what you are lacking. Even when we are insufficient, the Holy Spirit helps, so that even the small, insufficient things we can offer up can be used for the Kingdom of God,” the congregation was assured once again.

Apostle Paul uses the example of our prayers. Even this most basic element of our lives of faith, we often lack clarity, and we can give dispassionate or even unclear prayers. But even here the Spirit intercedes for us, and moves all things to work in accordance with the will of God.

When we realize we have this deep co-working with the Holy Spirit, we will know we are not alone. Even when we feel too weak, we will find strength – not from ourselves – but from above through the Spirit of God that is always with us.

Romans 8:18 proclaims that our present sufferings are incomparable to the glory that is to come. The history of God is always moving forwards, neither Satan, nor man’s weakness can stop this.

The Holy Spirit works in all things to move the history in accordance with the will of God. So that even good can be brought out of the evil things, and light can rise from even the darkest places.

Satan tried to destroy the Early Church, but from this great persecution, the Good News of Jesus was taken to countless new cities, regions and lands.

Indeed, Saul was a man filled with hatred for Jesus and His followers, and he even oversaw the martyrdom of Stephen. But even in this darkest of hearts, God has the power to bring out the greatest of lights, and Apostle Paul became the greatest evangelist of the Early Church.

This same Holy Spirit is working in us today. We do not need to despair of our weaknesses and our insufficiencies. We are no longer just ourselves, but there is the Holy Spirit that dwells with us at all times, and will intercede in all things for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

May each member be strengthened by the knowledge that the Holy Spirit is working in them.

On May 10th, Europe Olivet Center commemorated the day of the Lord, gathering to offer Sunday Service. Pastor Andrew delivered a message from 1 Kings 3:4-14 titled “I Will Give You A Wise and Discerning Heart”.

Many people in the world seek for wisdom, thinking it has something to do with intelligence. But wisdom does not come from man nor from the knowledge of this world, but from God above. We must know this well, and make sure we seek wisdom from the right place; we must seek from above.

When Solomon was made king after his father, David, he did not seek to wield his power and rule with his strength, but with humility he sought God and made 1000 sacrifices to Him.

This pleased God, and the Lord came to Solomon and told him to ask for anything he wanted and it would be given. In this we can see the beautiful image of our God, who trusted and had faith in Solomon. Through the history, fallen man had disappointed God so many times, but still God’s faith and love towards man is unchanging.

We should remember that our God is the faithful and giving Father and He wants to bless us. He does not doubt us, but trusts us immeasurably without calculation.

King Solomon did not betray God’s offer, but then responded with humility. He replies by first remembering who God is – the God who was faithful to his father, David, and that it is only by the grace and love of God that he himself has his position on the throne today. God is the one who gave him all his authority and position.

Solomon makes himself small, saying he is “like a little child”, and insufficient for the responsibilities being placed upon him. So with humility he seeks wisdom from God, to lead the people of God wisely according to God’s will.

“We might also face this situation; where we feel like we lack so much, and we are so insufficient, not knowing how to fulfil the responsibilities and work given to us,” said Pastor Andrew. “And so just like Solomon, we need to rely upon God and seek wisdom from heaven above.”

We are able to see when Solomon made himself small, confessing his weaknesses and insufficiencies, asking for God’s help and mercy, then God is the one who raises Solomon up greatly. It is not for man to raise ourselves up, but God alone can do this.

This reply of Solomon touched God’s heart, and we next see that God truly is the God of abundance. Not only does he grant Solomon wisdom, but he grants it abundantly. He says he will make Solomon wiser than any man that had come before him, and even after him there would be no one like him. Not only that, but even things Solomon did not ask for, God still grants it to him – both wealth and honor.

Members were reminded that God wants to bless us, and He wants to give all good things to us. We cannot even begin to comprehend the heart and blessings of God. He even gives to us blessings beyond what we can think to ask for. He always makes the way for us, and prepares many blessings for us in advance even before we can think to ask for them.

We must remember God chose us out from this world. We are not here today by chance. But God guided us here, opened our eyes and made us clean by the blood of the lamb. He has distinguished us and wants to set us up as a source of blessings in this world. He loves us, and wants to bless us.

So now we should no longer lean on our own understanding, but trust in the Lord with all our hearts. God promises He will give wisdom to those who ask. Let us seek the true wisdom from above, so that we may be guided in all our mission work, our ministry works, even our relationships and our personal spiritual standards, that we may become a source of God’s blessings to this world.
